Zemanta at Mozilla Camp Europe 2008

It was a great honor for Zemanta when Mozilla Europe gave us an opportunity to lead a session on our business case study at the Mozilla Camp Europe 2008.

A two-day conference is taking place in Barcelona, Catalonia (Spain) from October 25 to 26, and brings together staff and community members of Mozilla from 3 main areas – developers, localizes and the Q&A team, with a special focus on Europe.

It started with an introduction by Tristan Nitot (Mozilla Europe President) and John Lilly (Mozilla Corporation CEO), which was followed by three impressive keynotes on the future products.

I especially liked David Ascher (Mozilla Messaging) and his demonstration of the new Thunderbird UI, which is probably not going to make it into the 3.0 release. Sadly, because that is the first e-mail (or should I say all-in-one communications?) client after Gmail that left an impression on me.

Aza Raskin (Mozilla Labs) showed some new tricks of the amazing Ubiquity and Christian Sejersen gave us a demo of Firefox Mobile (Fennec). I saw both of them before, but they still appear to be part of the next big thing of the Mozilla story.

It was hard to compete with all this bells and whistles from Mozilla, especially because my talk was scheduled to be the last one on the first day of the conference, when people start thinking about dinner or a nap. And it was planned to collide with a session on Ubiquity. But that one got canceled! Luckily. :-)

So my talk on Zemanta and it’s decision to focus on Firefox as it’s main platform got some more attraction than I expected. It was focused on two issues we are facing on the fronted side – having many different blogging platforms without their own APIs and the cross-site scripting. And of course, how Firefox helped us to overcome both of them.

It looked like the session was well received. At least, nobody fell asleep. ;)

  • Thanks for the nice comments about my talk!

There's a bit of time before Thunderbird 3 is done, though, so I'm hopeful you'll see at least part of what I showed in the final product.
