Updates from the Zemanta tech shop

Posted by tilly, under zemanta on March 12th, 2010

If the internet is the information superhighway, then the Zemanta suggestion engine would be the Tesla sports car of the road. Here are a couple of quick updates and repairs made at the Zemanta tech shop to ensure that the ride is smooth as possible:

- New integration updates for several additional sources, including Google Finance and soon some others.

- Platform support for FCKEditor on WordPress 2.9

- Smoothed out a few rocky spots in Windows Live Writer, including tags and block resizing

- Removed image pixie on Blogger drag and drop implementation

- In response to numerous bug reports, we disabled link-on-selection due to quirky behavior

Do you have features or suggestions you would like to add to our “Honey-do” list? Drop us a line!

I'd like to be able to restrict the Zemanta suggestions to bloggers and small sites rather than “big media”. Or better still be able to filter the two.

The big media links can be useful – but for me tapping into the blogger zeitgeist is more inspiring.

You can simply put the feeds you want into My Sources and then use “My sources” tab. Zemanta will suggest just the articles from those feeds to you in that case.

    Hope that helps :)

    Hi Andraz

I've tested that… and it works just fine. But now it's hard to tease out my own posts.

Would it be possible to tweak Zemanta so I can have two lists of sources?

  • andraz

You can switch between “My sources” and global sources. That's the idea.

@Andraz – yes I get that. I'd like a third option: my sources 1, my sources 2, global sources. Is that realistic?

I understand now. I have to say that is not planned for near future. So maybe you can find some kind of workaround.

We are thinking more along the lines of making the product simpler. Ideas of what bothers you with current Zemanta (except sources) are very welcome.

What works, but could work so much better or what is completely useless and can be removed? :)

    My thoughts on Zemanta are:

    1. I don't use the images. I wonder if these might be a distraction or whether most other users find them useful.

    2. Zemanta works just fine inside WordPress on Firefox or IE8 when I'm using my desktop. I don't see how this can be improved.

    3. However it's hard to see what's going on on my laptop which has a smaller screen – maybe you could move the Zemanta action to another browser tab?

    4. It's a little harder to know what's going on in the preferences dialog. I understand it now, but it took some time.

    5. Sometimes I know there are stories in my database, but Zemanta can't find them. I'm not sure why this happens.

    6. Tags are just fine.

    7. I suspect the reblog button is a waste of time – but that's just one person's view
