New Release: Pretty image attribution, Wikinvest and Uptake links

Posted by jure, under releases on April 10th, 2009

Zemanta helps you find great images for your blogs automatically and we hear that you love us for that. What we also make sure is that original author is correctly attributed so there’s plenty of good will going around and with it we’ll get even more great images to use in the future.

Pretty image attribution

We took a good look at how we insert images and we noticed that we can do it in a much nicer format, giving your blog a nice facelift while keeping author attribution in place. It’s best explained with an example:

Carved gallant genre scene with figurines from...

If you mouse-over the image, the attribution will be shown and you can still click on the image to go to the original source.

For the ones that are reading this through RSS feeds, here’s a screenshot of how it looks:

This update is available automatically to everyone that blogs on self-hosted Wordpress.org, Blogger, Drupal and Movable Type and Typepad . You can adjust it in Zemanta Preferences.

Two new link sources: Wikinvest and Uptake

  • Wikinvest is a comprehensive wiki of companies on stock market and stories behind them, giving you a better understanding of what they really are, beyond pure statistics.
  • UpTake.com is a travel and search discovery site. We’re linking to their collection of attractions and activities in San Francisco area. It’s still a bit experimental so do make sure to tell us how it work for you.

Other notable updates

From the collection of fixed bug and improvements, we wanted to note the following:

  • GMail integration improvements: Zemanta doesn’t overlay over writing area when Composing email in a new window. We also added [X] on top of Widget as alternative way to remove Zemanta from GMail:

disable zemanta gmail

  • We follow even more new feeds
  • Improvements to accuracy and speed of how fast we return recommendations

  • Nice additions, although I have a question about the new attribution. The old way attribution worked, it used static links but the new way uses JavaScript, so doesn't that mean as far as search engines are concerned you're no longer linking to the attributed source URL?

Any chance for an update to the Zemanta blog plugin.
Maybe make it more stable. I've notice since starting to
use Zemanta that more than 50% of the time it forces my
blog post to be saved as Private instead of public. Very strange.

Maybe Zemanta could return more that just a few related pictures
along with the other unrelated pictures that now appear. When
entering a search term, typically half of the pics returned are
unrelated to the search term entered.

Zemanta could be a truly great plugin if it were developed
more and some major bugs improved. Currently, It seems like
a "cool" idea but doesn't truly seem very practical. I will keep
experimenting with it, though. Maybe you'll improve.
  • Thanks for making one of my favorite blog tools even better! Great improvements.
  • Personally I prefer the new attribution links. The old way used to cause havoc with some themes, and resulted in my deleting the attribution or my crediting them by means of some other mechanism.

I think this is the best feature in this release.

    Great work guys!
  • LIKE the new image attribution, not least because the old way didn't escape characters properly and muddied my posts with lots of jibberish characters! Zemanta is rapidly becoming my favourite blogging tool - nice work guys!
  • I thought the new image attribution mouseover was great, but it only seemed to last one day before everything went back to the way it was before? And it's stayed that way. I never encountered problems with it, but presume you have? I'd like to see it back as soon as possible, it was a vast improvement! Thank you.

It seems that there was a slight glitch in our system. Pretty
attribution on mouseover should work correctly now. Do let us know at
support@zemanta.com if it doesn't work for your next blog post.
  • It's working beautifully again now, thank you. And I'd just like to add that I find your plugin indispensible these days. It adds colourful visual interest to posts, especially useful on the front page.
  • How can I customize what feeds I want followed for my related stories?
