How relevant is popular authority?

Not very much it turns out. At least not as much as Chocolate mud pie.
We’ve asked our users what they like, what they wish for and what flavor pie they like the most.
468 respondents were happy to share their intimate secrets with us and confessed they really have a sweet tooth.
A hefty 93% of the participants decided to reveal their taste in pies, more than 90% of them seem to have a positive attitude towards these delights. We are seeing a very definite tendency to experiment with nonstandard pie flavors, even though amongst the identified examples the chocolate mud pie is a strong leader with an independent 23% votes. Cherry, strawberry rhubarb, pumpkin, banana cream and coconut follow in that order all with about only half the attention of the chocolate mud.
Zemanta-provided recommendations however are almost unanimously satisfactory – 65% respondents are satisfied and 23% are neutral, leaving us much space to improve on the quality of recommendations.
But what is a good recommendation anyway? We’ve asked about more specific attributes of what’s important and the good news is, almost everyone has opinion!
It seems that our users don’t care about popularity of the sources, care a bit about authority and recency, but really mostly care a lot about relevancy. This is important because that means bloggers believe in democratic nature of blogging and will consider opinions from non-established sources.
We also asked if you configured Zemanta to recommend you articles from your preferred list of sources – your own blog, your friends, stuff you read in feed readers… It turns out 42% didn’t know about this feature! s-h-a-m-e on us! Loud and clear this time: You should go to preferences and check this out, or read this tutorial first.
If you’re curious about more details here is the Zemanta Survey 2010. Happy to hear your feedback or comments.
