On  Tuesday we revealed our joint campaign with Social Innovation Greenhouse @ Weber Shandwick to further empower bloggers to use their voices to change the world with blogging.128x128_bloggingforacause

      Wanted to let you know about one of the best kept secrets in terms of non-profits: Atlanta-based CURE Childhood Cancer (www.curechildhoodcancer.org). CURE is one of the most focused of all charities set up to fund a cure for childhood cancer. Of all the millions of dollars the Federal Govt earmarks for cancer research only 3% goes to pediatric cancer research. Serously. And, cancer is the #1 disease killer of children, taking more young lives than many diseases combined. Funny man Jeff Foxworthy learned about the org and subsequently produced radio and video psa’s because the lack of federal funding is so not funny. Baseball great Tom Glavine and his wife, Chris, became acquainted with CURE’s Executive Director, Kristin Connor, (a former partner at a big law firm in Atlanta, her son was actually diagnosed in utero, when she was 8 months pregnant with stage 4 neuroblastoma, one of the most aggressive forms of pediatric cancer) and are devoted to raising money to fund clinical trials to find a cure. Kristin’s son is a miracle and thriving today but during that dark journey Kristin met so many families of kids with cancer who weren’t so fortunate; she hung up her litigating boots and 6-figure salary to devote herself fulltime to build CURE Childhood Cancer into one of the great non-profits around, and raising over $1 million a year to support Atlanta-based Aflac Cancer Center in Atlanta. Did you know that kids are still being given adult drug treatments because there aren’t clinical trials that focus on pediatric oncology? Numbers are small compared to, say, breast cancer or adult cancer victims; if kids survive that aggressive chemo, radiation and bone marrow transplants, the problems they have in their 20s as a result of that radiation exposure and levels of toxic drugs at such a young age, can produce infertility, skin cancer and other developments when they become adults. Please consider CURE Childhood Cancer when determining what non-profit needs your support. Our kids deserve nothing less.
