2010: a fresh new start

The new decade is for new beginnings and new experiences. You can make New Years resolutions every year, but starting a fresh new decade is a different kind of clean slate. Its a chance to start new healthier habits, learn new skills, and try something that you have always talked about wanting to do.

Being in the technology industry, I am surrounded by brilliant people. Programmers, engineers and designers who all have technical skills that I have always admired, but have been too scared or intimidated to experience myself. I have used every excuse in the book “But it looks so hard!” & “I suck at math!” & “Its way too over my head”.

Until I started to realize how much I was holding myself back. Its not written anywhere that I can’t program computer apps, and its not like these amazing engineers woke up one day and knew how to code in Ruby without even cracking a book. Everyone has to start somewhere, and that somewhere is having the desire to start something new, and stop making excuses.

And now, as we wrap up our first full week of 2010, I encourage you to take a moment to sit down and think about what you want this new decade to be. Is this the year that you finally learn how to cook? How about taking a college class in a topic that you have always been interested in? Shoot for the stars and decide that this is the decade that you will be on Broadway! Or heck, you can start out small by just making a pact to blog everyday, or try to call your grandma once a week.

What about you? How are you going to improve in 2010? If you’re not sure where to begin, check out 101 in 365 and find some inspiration from their Explore page. Personally, in 2010 I have decided that I will program an Android app. I have no idea what it will do (I’m pretty sure that it might probably involve a certain sexy API) But I do know that I am no longer going to let any excuses stand in my way.

Share your stories in the comments and can we start this together!

Later Gators!

This little essay is interesting for several reasons. The interesting reason that stands out above all the rest is this essay seems to have been conceived and delivered in a time warp. The reason I say that is this is the last year of the present decade, not the first year of the next, so your essay is one year early in coming.

Time is counted, like money and pretty much everything else: one, two, three, and so on; not zero, one, two. . . .

There's no need to rush in time to a new decade or a new century, for that matter. Time won't rush to meet you, so there seems little use in rushing to meet it. A new decade will get here when it gets here and not before.

Other than that outstanding point, this is a nice little essay and I bet it will be viewed as a nice little essay next year when its time for publishing will have come.

Oh well, so your timing was a little off on this essay; that doesn't detract from all the good you do and, for which, I thank you.
